The Karaiskakio Foundation is a non-profit organization established for the sole purpose of giving hope for life to people suffering from leukaemia. It was founded by Michalis Karaiskakis, the Ministry of Health, the Leukaemia Society of the U.K. and the Platelet Donor Association of Cyprus.
THE CYPRUS BONE MARROW DONOR REGISTRY
The Cyprus Bone Marrow Donor Registry with more than 100,000 registered volunteer donors, has the highest per capita ratio of donors in the world. Being advanced and efficient with highly qualified and experienced staff, it helps patients from all over the world to find compatible donors for bone marrow transplantation. All donors recruited through the Registry automatically become part of the international registry "Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide" (BMDW) which can be easily accessed by all registries in their search for a compatible donor. HARVEST CENTER Our Registry works in close cooperation with the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the Department of Haematology of the Nicosia General Hospital where bone marrow, peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC), as well as donor lymphocytes are collected from volunteer donors. The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit of the Nicosia General Hospital was established in 1997 and is registered and accredited for bone marrow harvest and autologous bone marrow transplantation (CIC575) by EBMT (European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation).
